  anglicized
i forgot that this saturday i have class. but i want to go to mundelein because i really like the university of st. mary of the lake and being invited to help facilitate catholic conferences exclusively for asians don't happen every weekend. unlike my class. there's always next weekend. but i'd be disappointing my teacher. and i paid for that class, dammit.

we're reading european magical realists, or at least, european writers my teacher considers to write magical realism. if i paid attention during undergrad and when the class opened, i would have a better idea of "magical realism" other than that i think they're like dali's paintings. i would totally be even more clueless if i missed this weekend's class.

on the first day of class our teacher made us read "the aleph" out loud. some of us can't prounounce the names, and my teacher wanted to make it easier for us, she said, "oh, the name should be anglicized, i'm sorry," or something along that vein.

i'm thinking, you shouldn't "anglicize" a name. just coz it is possible doesn't mean that it should.

trust me. i know what i'm talking about.

a name is a simple thing. it is one word in the sea of hundreds of million-millions. it will not hurt you if you can pronounce it correctly. the time you encounter it will probably be the only time in your lifetime you'll need to.

i wish i could say this to my professor. i'm sure she won't mind, either, which is the best thing. but maybe later, after i finally decide whether to skip class this weekend. if i skip class, i should write her an email spilling all my thoughts about the stories we've read so far - to show her that i am learning something in her class, ahaha. you should always give your teacher assurances like that. even if they might totally ignore your email or use it to test you, ahahaha.
