  and so

[ spoilers ahead! ]

there are many things i liked about kate dicamillo's latest book, "the miraculous journey of edward tulane." but what i liked the most has to do with the decision to love.

i liked how dicamillo shows how easy it is to fall into bitterness - but how even harder it is to hold on to that bitterness. the reasons for becoming bitter are often clear as day, whereas the reasons for love are often hidden.

if one finds it easy to fall into bitterness, it is even easier to fall in love. isn't that just remarkable? there's a saying my friend texted me in the days following valentine's day - "where the heart is willing, it will find a thousand ways, but where it is unwilling it will find a thousand excuses."

edward didn't know it.

edward's heart stirred. ...

no, no, he told himself. don't believe it. don't let yourself believe it.

but it was too late.

someone will come for you.

the china rabbit's heart had begun, again, to open.

(page 192)

edward unwittingly made a decision, and he did it on his own. it was the only way.

like many unexpected things in his life, he was rewarded beyond the sweetest his heart can imagine.

and so.
